Keeping your hamster healthy starts with a proper diet and a clean, safe environment. Whether you’re a first-time owner or looking to upgrade your care routine, here’s everything you need to know.
Hamster Daily Diet Guidelines
High-Quality Hamster Food Mix (Main Diet – 80%)
Provide a seed and grain-based mix specifically made for hamsters. It should include sunflower seeds, oats, corn, millet, and other small grains.
- Choose unsweetened, natural mixes with no artificial colors or added sugar.
- Avoid cheap mixes with too many sunflower seeds or low-quality fillers.
Fresh Vegetables (10%)
Offer small portions of fresh veggies like:
- Carrot
- Broccoli
- Cucumber
- Romaine lettuce
Feed in moderation to avoid diarrhea.
Treats & Fruits (5–10%)
Occasionally give fruits like apple (no seeds), banana, or melon.
- Limit treats to 1–2x per week.
Water
- Fresh Water
Always provide clean, room-temperature water. Use a water bottle or heavy ceramic dish that won’t tip over.
Cage Cleaning & Environment
Spot Clean Daily: Remove soiled bedding and leftover food.
Full Clean Weekly: Change all bedding, sanitize the enclosure, and refresh water and food bowls.
Use Unscented Bedding: Paper-based or wood-pulp bedding is best. Avoid pine or cedar.
