Rabbit Care Guide – How to Properly Care for Your Bunny

Caring for a rabbit takes dedication, but with the right routine and setup, they’re incredibly rewarding pets. Here’s everything you need to know before welcoming one of our rabbits into your home:

Diet Requirements

A healthy diet is crucial for your rabbit’s digestion, dental health, and energy levels. Here’s what we feed our rabbits and recommend for continued care:

90% Hay (Alfalfa Canowindra Hay or Timothy Hay)
Hay should be the foundation of your rabbit’s diet. It helps prevent dental problems and supports healthy digestion.

  • Young rabbits (under 6 months): Alfalfa Canowindra Hay
  • Adult rabbits: Timothy Hay (or a mix with alfalfa in moderation)

10% Pellets (Chexter Rabbit Pellet)
Feed in the morning only. Chexter Rabbit Pellets are formulated to support growth and maintain coat health. Measure daily to avoid overfeeding.

Water
Clean drinking water should be available at all times. Use a heavy bowl or water bottle depending on your setup.

Optional Greens (For older rabbits)
Once your rabbit is 3 months and up, you may gradually introduce small portions of leafy greens such as romaine, kangkong, or basil. Always observe for soft stools when introducing new food.

Supplements

To support their immune system and overall wellness, we recommend giving LCVit once every 7 days. This multivitamin can be added to water or given as advised.

Grooming Routine

Long-haired breeds (such as Lionheads or Angoras) require weekly grooming.
✅ Brush at least once per week to prevent tangles and hairballs.
Short-haired breeds require less maintenance, but still benefit from occasional brushing to reduce shedding.

Also check:

  • Ears: Should be clean, no foul smell
  • Eyes & Nose: No discharge or crusting
  • Nails: Trim monthly or as needed

Housing & Setup

Your rabbit’s environment plays a big role in their happiness. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A clean, spacious pen or cage with room to stretch and hop
  • Hay bedding or paper-based litter (avoid wood shavings)
  • A hiding spot or small shelter for comfort
  • Daily cleaning of litter box and food areas
  • Toys for mental stimulation (chew-safe materials)

Rabbits are social and active, so allow them supervised playtime outside the cage, especially in the evening when they’re most active.

Rehoming Policy

Our Rabbits for Rehoming are available to buyers who understand the responsibilities of rabbit care. These are not trial pets, and we encourage buyers to prepare their home and supplies before placing a reservation. Each rabbit has a rehoming fee, which helps support our care standards, feeding program, and continued maintenance of our setup.

Please be sure you’re ready — rabbits can live 8 to 12 years and deserve a stable, loving environment.

If you’re ready to bring home a rabbit that’s been well-cared for and properly raised, check out our Rabbits for Rehoming list and send us a message for inquiries. Let your next best friend hop into your life today. 🐇💚
